Subproject: Collaboration and Public Engagement
Collaboration and Public Engagement
The public can engage in research in various ways, collaborating with scholars to develop new knowledge, create new research themes, or address pressing issues together. So far, this kind of collaboration has typically involved the public contributing by collecting data about plants and animals, but there are also many initiatives underway in the humanities and social sciences.
In the context of open science, this means that the public will have free access to research findings (science communication) and that they will be able to contribute to research projects by collecting data (citizen science), help formulate projects (stakeholder engagement), and participate in the research as such (co-creation).
Description of the subproject
Collaboration and Public Engagement is one of five subprojects identified in Linnaeus University’s project directive for open science, from 5 April 2023 (Swedish only). The other subprojects are: Open Access to Scholarly Publications, Open Access to Research Data, Open Educational Resources, and Incentive System in the Form of Funding and Recognition of Qualifications.
The project directive for open science includes overarching project goals. For the subproject on public engagement, the goal is for the university to contribute to strengthening public participation in the research process and to allow the public to help set knowledge in motion for sustainable societal development.
The following project objectives are relevant to the subproject on public engagement:
- to identify areas where collaboration is particularly important and propose methods to increase exchange
- to map public engagement in the research process and identify any needs for additional activities
- to offer suggestions for methodological support and initiatives to educate researchers on how the public can be more involved in the research process
- to suggest ways to clarify how the public can reach relevant researchers or research groups at Linnaeus University.
Get involved!
If you are working with public engagement in your research, you are very welcome to contact us and to get involved in the work on open science. If you have questions about the subproject or would like to learn more, please contact the subproject manager Ann-Charlotte Larsson or the project manager Bo Bergbäck.
