The Linnaeus Exhibition at Linnaeus University

The exhibition on Carl Linnaeus opened at the University Library in Växjö on September 27, 2023.

This exhibition explores the scientist whose name we carry. It aims to place Carl Linnaeus and his work in context and in dialogue with today’s world. Who was Linnaeus? How do we engage with his intellectual legacy? And what does it mean for a university to bear the name of a historical figure?

When Linnaeus University was founded, choosing a name was a major undertaking. More than ten years later, it’s time to revisit that decision. Carl Linnaeus is one of Sweden’s most celebrated scientists – but is he the right role model for a modern university? For a place where critical thinking and open debate are essential, this is a question worth asking. This exhibition is part of that conversation.

The exhibition was developed by The Cultural University initiative together with Gunlög Fur, then Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability and Equal Opportunities, as part of a Vice-Chancellor’s commission in 2022. Texts for the Linnaeus Collection were authored by Torbjörn Lindell.
