Information systems offer opportunities for enterprises and for people to communicate, learn, innovate and organize.
This programme gives advanced and broad knowledge of the planning, design and use of information systems in organisations and businesses.
It will also prepare for research studies within informatics. The aim is to give each student the competence needed to describe and analyse businesses, organisations and their need for developing information systems.
In order to be able to work in these fields, we consider it important to have the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyse and handle complex questions and issues. It is also important to develop one’s ability to critically, independently and in a creative way identify and express questions.
Examples of themes of the programme includes: IS/IT for Organizing, Communicating and Coordinating; Ontologies and Epistemologies: Methodologies, Methods and Theories; Big Data in Organizations, Business, and Society.
After the education you could work with projects with the purpose to plan, design and introduce information systems intended to development businesses or organizations.

Can you tell me about your degree programme? How do you like it?
"It is a rich mixture of IT and business, where information plays a central role. The courses offered cover a variety of relevant topics and prepares us well for our future professional lives."
Why did you choose to study at Linnaeus University?
"This was my first choice when choosing among programmes in Sweden. The primary reason was the structure of the programme, which is quite diverse and covers many areas I'm interested in. Secondly, I heard Växjö is a small, beautiful city with a rich student life and lots of things to do. Personally, I prefer smaller cities to larger ones."
What's your impression of Sweden and the Swedes?
"A beautiful country with beautiful people. Swedes are somewhat reserved initially, but very friendly once you get to know them."
What do you do besides your studies?
"I am an online gaming enthusiast. In my free time, I usually play online with my friends who are in other parts of the world. This gives me a chance to have some fun while catching up with them. Apart from that, I have been learning Swedish through SFI (Swedish For Immigrants) for the past one year, and during weekends I like to hang out with my campus friends."
What are your career plans?
"To work here in Sweden. I would like to start off with a PhD, which would allow me to try and face different challenges in a dynamic work life. After my PhD, I would be confident to continue to build on my passion towards a career within information systems."
What's the best thing about being a student at Linnaeus University?
"As a student at Linnaeus University, you can have a very balanced social life during your studies. You will have time to do the things you love to do. I think that's how the Swedish education system is designed. It's all about learning, growing and having fun at the same time!"
Major field of study is Informatics it is within the subject group Computer Science and Engineering, where Computer Science and Media Technology is included. The program coordinator has the overall responsibility for the program. There is a program committee and there duties are to follow up the program course content and implementation.
The program consists of 60 credits in Informatics, corresponding to 1 year full time study. In semester 1 students are introduced to the main field with focus on organization, design and management, and the main methods, methodologies and theories. The program concludes with a degree project of 15 credits, which is placed part time during the last semester of studies.
The program is structured in a way that allows for joint classes during its duration with the twoyear masters program in Information Systems.

IS/IT for Organizing, Communicating and Coordinating I, 15 credits, A1N
The course aims to provide the student with insight into the private and the public sector, in some cases, innovative development through ICT usage and preparing for a critical and constructive approach in the development and implementation of ICT.
Contemporary issues in IS research and development, 7.5 credits, A1N
The course focuses on current problem areas in Informatics and how different theories, approaches, methods and techniques can be used based on a scientific approach.
Information Systems Methodology, 7.5 credits, A1N
The purpose of the course is to acquire basic knowledge about scientific paradigms,
methodologies, and methods within informatics/information systems research area. With such introduction, the course also aims at providing students practical understanding about the relationship between research paradigms, research phenomena, research questions, methodological strategies for data gathering and analysis.
Big Data in Organizations, Business, and Society, 15 credits, A1N
This course focuses on aspects related to the design, organization and coordination of data and information seen from a data analytic lifecycle perspective. The course includes methods, techniques and tools for analysis of big data, which is one of the current challenges in informatics. The course also addresses ethical issues involving
insights about the impact on the public and private sectors in society.
Degree Project 15 credits, A1E
The students are writing their thesis in semester 2 parallel with another course. In this course, the student is given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills in the subject area and its methodologies.

About the distance education
You can choose to study this programme on campus or as a distance education. The distance education at Linnaeus University in the Department of Informatics provides distance students with almost the same opportunities as those who study on campus. Consequently, it means that the distance students will be able to follow the lectures in real time together with the campus students. However, it is important to keep in mind that most distance education includes a number of compulsory digital lectures and seminars during the weekdays. In addition, the lectures, seminars and other mandatory parts of the course are given during the weekdays and working hours, i.e. 8.00 – 17.00 GMT + 1 time zone.
Moreover, the common denominator of a distance student in the Department of Informatics is that the lectures are streamed in real-time on the web. In addition, the students communicate with the teachers and fellow students using an e-learning platform. The e-learning platform supports the teaching and learning process including, for instance, discussion forums where the students can ask questions related to the course and its topic, discuss group work, and have video meetings with the support of a webcam and headset, etc.
To study on a distance education will give you different opportunities than on-campus teaching. It means that, to a large extent, you will be able to plan your studies yourself, both in terms of time and place.
However, keep in mind that most distance education includes a number of compulsory digital lectures and digital seminars during the weekdays. Some distance education also include compulsory get-togethers, for which you will have to travel to Växjö or Kalmar.
There are a number of different ways to be a distance student, the common denominator being that a large part of your study work is carried out on the web. You communicate with the teacher and your fellow students using a learning platform with discussion forums, group work, recorded lectures or video meetings using a web cam.
