Interactive AI Systems, Master Programme
120 creditsDo you want to explore how humans and AI can work together responsibly, creatively, and sustainably? As you know artificial intelligence is transforming society — but the future of AI is not just autonomous, it is human-driven. This master programme in Interactive AI Systems prepares you to design and develop intelligent systems that learn from, adapt to, and support people in real time. With a degree from this master programme you will be able to build the future of human-AI collaboration.
By combining expertise from media technology, computer science, and informatics, it equips you with both the technical depth and the social perspective required to design interactive and responsible AI.
Over two years of full-time study (120 credits), you will:
• Gain solid foundations in machine learning for interactive systems, information visualisation, explainable AI, and human–AI interaction.
• Explore AI ethics, sustainability, and human-centred design.
• Apply scientific methods through research-oriented seminars and project-based courses. Often in collaboration with external partners.
• Choose electives in advanced topics, internships, or exchange studies during the third semester.
• Conclude with a 30-credit master’s thesis, possibly linked to industry projects or research collaborations.
The programme emphasises applied learning. From the very start, you will work with projects that simulate professional challenges – analysing data, building prototypes, and evaluating interactive AI solutions with users. In your second year, you can choose electives, complete an internship, or study abroad in partner institutions such as TH Lübeck (Germany) and the University of Iceland. This allows you to broaden your international perspective and graduate with a diverse set of skills and knowledge.
Our teachers are active researchers in cutting-edge areas such as visual analytics, human-centred AI, and interactive systems. Guest lecturers, case studies, and industry collaborations ensure that the programme stays closely connected to ongoing developments in both academia and society.
Career
As a graduate from Interactive AI Systems you will be prepared for diverse careers across industries where human-centred AI is in demand – from healthcare and education to creative industries, public services, and tech companies. The programme also gives you a strong foundation for doctoral studies and an academic career.
Examples of relevant career paths after graduation include:
• AI strategist
• Data visualisation specialist
• Human-AI interaction designer
• Human-in-the-loop AI application developer
• Research Engineer and/or PhD candidate in Human-AI Interaction or related areas

International possibilities
At Linnaeus University, you have plenty of opportunity to broaden your international perspective. During the course of your programme, you can choose to study abroad through exchange studies to gain international experience. If you do, you will conduct part of your studies at one of our many partner universities around the world.
We are part of the European University for Well-Being, EUniWell. You therefore have the opportunity to study courses focusing on sustainability and well-being together with other European students, either online or on site.
Also at home you can gain international experience. Many courses contain intercultural elements. For instance, in the form of course literature or guest lecturers from other countries. In your leisure time, you can get involved in associations together with students from a wide range of other programmes and countries, or meet international students through our buddy programme.

A master’s programme focusing on both technology and people
This master’s programme gives you the tools to design the AI solutions of the future – with a focus on both technology and people.
The programme Interactive AI Systems is built on expertise from subject areas such as media technology, computer science, and informatics.
“The programme offers a unique combination of technical depth and human perspectives. You will learn to develop AI systems that are not only efficient, but also explainable, ethically sustainable, and user-friendly. You will also gain a broad and contemporary understanding of how AI affects and interacts with people and society,” says Rafael Messias Martins, Senior lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, who has been involved in developing the program.

A programme for those who want to work at the intersection of technology, design, and society
Over the two years of the programme, you will study machine learning for interactive systems, information visualisation, explainable AI, ethics, and sustainability. You will also have the opportunity to choose elective courses and complete your studies with a degree project in an area you are passionate about. Teaching is conducted in English in an international environment with close contact between students and researchers.
“The programme is research-oriented and practice-focused. You will work on projects linked to both research environments and industry, and you will have opportunities for internships or studies abroad,” Rafael continues.
The programme is aimed at those with a background in, for example, media technology, computer science, or related fields, who want to take the next step in their development. Perhaps you are passionate about creating smart, visual, and user-centred solutions or want to contribute to the responsible use of AI in society.
“Through workshops, seminars, and collaboration with companies and organisations, you will apply theory to real-world contexts and develop prototypes, analytical tools, and solutions to current societal challenges,” Rafael concludes.
Career opportunities in the AI of the future
After graduation, you will have the competence to lead the development of responsible and user-centred intelligent systems. Common career paths include AI strategist, data visualisation specialist, human–AI interaction designer, and developer of human-in-the-loop AI applications. You may also choose to continue to doctoral studies in areas such as explainable AI, visual analytics, computer science, and media technology.
Växjö – the student city with a vibrant campus
