International Tourism Management

180 credits

The International Tourism Management Programme prepares you to work in one of the world’s largest and most dynamic industries. With more than 45 years of experience in tourism education, the programme is one of the most established in Sweden – combining global perspectives with local sustainability projects, practical assignments and close collaboration with the tourism industry.

Here, international tourism theory meets real cases from Kalmar’s active visitor economy. You will learn how tourism shapes societies, cultures and businesses – and how you can contribute to a more sustainable, innovative and responsible global tourism future.

During your studies, you will take courses in areas such as hospitality management, event management, destination management and entrepreneurship, alongside business courses such as e-commerce and marketing. You will develop strong analytical skills and gain an understanding of how tourism can support sustainable development.

Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries, and the demand for skilled, forward-thinking professionals who can combine business insight with a sustainability mindset is growing rapidly. All teaching is conducted in English, giving you international experience and a qualification that opens doors to career opportunities around the globe.

You will study on campus in Kalmar – a vibrant coastal student city with an active student life and close links with the tourism industry. Your learning will include lectures, projects, study trips, guest lectures and an internship. During your final semester, you can choose the path that suits you best:

• study abroad at one of our partner universities

• do an internship in the tourism sector, in Sweden or internationally

• specialise in marketing – a pathway that offers the possibility of a double degree

Moa Bertilsson

My name is Moa and right now I’m doing my 4th semester as an exchange student in Birmingham, UK🇬🇧 Here in Birmingham I study the courses: Travel and tourism marketing ✈️, Cross-cultur tourism 🌴and Principles of communication🗣 I only go to school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday which means that I have a lot of free time to visit other cities in this amazing country😄. The school-stuff is not as hard as in Sweden according to me which is nice but they have a very strict policy of attending all your classes and seminars🗓📖. Every lesson is 3 hours and it mostly consists of discussion which increases your possibility to improve your English skills.

A strong tourism management programme in a beautiful city was enticing.

Student Jooan

“The course structures are very diverse, and it keeps you interested throughout the course. Also, studying in Kalmar is much better than I anticipated. The city is charming, people are super nice and helpful. Everybody respects your personal space. It’s home away from home.” says Jooan.

Julia has always been curious of living in London. When she got the sight of an ad for an internship at Visit Sweden in London, she took the chance and got lucky! Now she lives there for six months as she’s helping Visit Sweden with their business. A tourism programme with great focus on business

Matilda Sjölin

Matilda chose to study the international tourism management programme because of its high standard and business base. It did not take long before she became engaged in both student associations and the programme council, a forum through which she has had the opportunity to influence her programme.

Kalmar – the student city by the sea

Right in the heart of Kalmar, by the sea, you’ll find Campus Kalmar. Everything is close by, and no matter where you live in the city, you’ll be within cycling distance of the university.

If you’re a new student, you’re covered by an accommodation guarantee, meaning you have the right to student housing within two months. This is one of the reasons why Kalmar has been recognised as one of Sweden’s best student cities – several times.

The municipality has around 70,000 inhabitants. The city boasts a strong business sector, with leading companies in green industries, e-commerce, and e-health, providing plenty of opportunities to make connections for your future career.

Kalmar has a charming and historic city centre, with small shops, cafés, and gyms nestled along cobbled streets and alleyways. The coastline offers great opportunities to enjoy nature – whether you want to go for a walk, exercise, swim, or simply relax. Plus – Öland is just a bridge away.
