Trojans, root kits, phishing and other threats to both individuals and businesses demand ever more attention. If you want to learn how to stop these threats, this programme is the right one for you!
Sensitive and confidential information, such as credit card numbers and medical records, is sent between computers around the world. How can we ensure that this information only reaches those it is meant for?
To become an expert in IT security, particularly network security, a series of competencies are required. You have to be good at handling a computer, of course, and at understanding how the different parts of a computer system interact. In particular, you also need to be able to program computers.
Computer science includes a number of other areas as well, such as operating systems and databases. You will, however, primarily focus on the network and security areas. This means that you will study courses such as administration of networks, mobile and wireless security, and distributed systems. In order to achieve IT security, encryption is required and to help you understand such tools, courses in mathematics are also included.
The programme gives you qualifications for a variety of professions. Examples of jobs that this education may lead to are programmer, network administrator and security consultant, in small as well as large companies. The IT world is global, so work abroad may be just as likely as work in Sweden.
Bachelor of Science with specialization in Network Security. Main field of study: Computer Science.
Martin faces new challenges constantly
Martin Jartelius studied computer science, with a specialization in networking and security, at Linnaeus University. The longer he came in his studies, the more Martin became interested in IT security. He now works as a Security Consultant, with the mission to ensure that information does not fall into the wrong hands.
"I knew that this programme would open doors to the jobs I was interested in", Martin says.
New environments. New people. New challenges. New front edge competence. As a consultant you have to be able to progress constantly as a person. That's why Martin Jartelius is very satisfied with the job at Logica in Stockholm.
"It's fun to learn new things. I got this job because of the right education and a personality that suited both the work as well as the team I work with."
Logica is an international IT services company with 40,000 employees, 5,500 in Sweden. This means that Martin, despite great personal responsibility, always has the backing of specialists in a wide range of fields.
Security in many ways
In his work as a Security Consultant, Martin has many different types of assignments.
"I work with risk analysis, safety training, incident investigations, computer forensics, vulnerability testing, application of systems for information security and much more", he explains.
The fact that his work is so broad; it is precisely the width of the education that he points out, and the range of elective courses in the subject area.
"The programme provided a sound theoretical basis, and with a broad basis like that I could manage in the entire IT field. As a consultant, it is important to understand the new regulations in a short time, understand the different technical solutions and be flexible", Martin says.
Let your interest rule
Martin's personal development has been faster than he could have hoped for. He stresses the importance of choosing an education that leads to something you're interested in.
"Think about where you see yourself in five or ten years. Not in the form of a job, but within a specific industry or something that attracts a particular interest. Then ask yourself what it takes to get there."
Martin recalls when the Head of Security at the company Boss Media, came to visit the university during his time as a student.
"He shaped to some degree my vision of what I wanted to work with. It seemed to me that he went to work with the satisfaction of working with something he really liked."
