Contemporary Methods for Automatic and Human Knowledge Organization in Cultural Heritage Organizations

In recent decades, cultural heritage institutions have had to adapt to the World Wide Web and the Semantic Web by developing new conceptual models, metadata standards, and controlled vocabularies. Some institutions have also leveraged social tagging and automated methods for knowledge organization. This course explores these transformations across the three types of cultural heritage institutions: libraries, archives, and museums. Throughout the course, students will discuss different approaches to knowledge organization in research seminars. Additionally, students will write a scientific article providing an overview of automatic approaches, including how metadata can be used to enhance automatic subject indexing in cultural heritage organizations.
