Research Approaches in Political Science

The course focuses on political science as a research subject, research specializations developed in political theory, political sociology, comparative politics, public administration and public policy, and international relations characterize political science studies and how different research specializations can be related to each other.
The course also reviews theoretical and empirical applications of different research directions and how they can be used to shed light on current political and political science challenges.

Prerequisites

The student must be admitted to doctoral studies in the social sciences.

Teaching method

Teaching takes place in the form of seminars/workshops and lectures, The seminars are based on a high level of self-study in which writing memorandums and a longer final paper is also included.

Expected learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an in-depth understanding of political science as a research subject
  • discuss how research approaches developed within the field of political theory, political sociology, comparative politics, public administration and government policy, and international relations characterise studies in political science and as well as how different research approaches correlate
  • demonstrate a deeper understanding of theoretical as well as empirical applications of various research approaches
  • analyse how various research approaches can be utilised to emphasise current challenges within the field of politics and political science, respectively.
