Third-cycle (doctoral) programme in maritime science

Kalmar Maritime Academy's research in the subject area of maritime science is about how to achieve environmentally sustainable and safe shipping with a good working environment. The research in the subject is currently divided into three different areas:

• Working life, organization and risk management
• Maritime environmental impact and marine planning
• Energy efficiency

What does the third-cycle subject area maritime science comprise?

The subject maritime science at Linnaeus University can be defined in general terms as studies related to operational activities within Swedish and international maritime transport. Encompassed within this definition is inter alia technological developments and interaction between people and technology, the working environment and the organisation, as well as the conditions for maritime transport and its consequences.

Within maritime science, for example, the technology and the knowledge that enables a crewmember's daily activities and how the organisation and the working environment can influence employee's engagement, commitment and well-being, is studied. Additionally, how international maritime transport is governed by economics and regulations, and how maritime transport affects the society and the environment, are also studied.

Graduate studies in maritime science involves developing research concerning maritime transport, where methods and theorising is obtained from other disciplines within the social sciences, natural sciences and technology.
