Linnaeus Media Observatory (LiMO) – Centre for media research, praxis and development
Linnaeus Media Observatory (LiMO) – Centre for media research, praxis and development. We unite research, praxis and development about media in society.
LiMO is a hub that brings together LNU’s various active environments of media research, practice and production to interact with and complement each other. LiMO is a catalyst for cross-disciplinary collaborations between media, technology, social sciences and the humanities that, together with media practice and development, investigate complex contemporary media phenomena and the role of the media in society.
Our activities
Linnaeus Media Observatory (LiMO) – Center for media research, praxis and development is located at Fojo Media Institute at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on Kalmar campus. With over fifty years of experience in professional education of journalists and development of media in Sweden and around the world, Fojo is firmly rooted in practice and external collaboration. In order to respond to the complex challenges of today, the center offers opportunities for in-depth co-creation with media research at LNU. In 2023, this work was initiated together with the Department of Media and Journalism (MJ) and the LNUC for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies at FKH and two inter-faculty Linnaeus Knowledge Environments, A Questioned Democracy (IfDem) and Digital Transformations (DT).
With the establishment of the center, it is time to step up this already productive collaboration that has already resulted in various collaborative projects and enabled more synergies at both faculty and university level as well as with partners outside the university. The center will establish an annual cycle of recurring activities that strengthen media research, praxis and development at LNU:
- LiMO Research seminar: Our research seminar series organized monthly during term time. We typically discuss draft articles or chapters among the research community or invite guest speakers.
- LiMO Foresight: Our annual day in spring devoted to identifying signals and trends on the horizon for media and media research.
- Media Research Day: Our annual day in autumn where we showcase fresh media research to the LNU-community, partners outside university and the public.
- LiMO Research Retreat: Our annual get-away day in late autumn where LiMO-members present and discuss ongoing research and applications and explore synergies
- LiMO Rapid Response: A network among LiMO-members with the aim to respond to calls for research and collaboration when needed and which quickly can coordinate teaching and training or other urgent responses.
- Shared calendar: A calendar for all media-related events at LNU
- Working Papers: Fojo Media Insights is a format for LiMO-affiliated researchers to publish their work in progress.

News deserts and local democracy in Vaxjö municipality – the role of local journalism in a sustainable digital societal development
In 2024–2025, together with Det Fria Ordets Hus (”The House of Free Speech”) LiMO conducts a project in order to explore news deserts, news avoidance and news fatigue among young people in Växjö municipality and how these phenomena impact local democracy.
