The Cluster for Borders of Justice: Migration, Equity, and the Global Postcolonial Order

The Cluster for Borders of Justice: Migration, Equity, and the Global Postcolonial Order is a research cluster focused on reimagining societies through the lenses of migration, justice, and belonging, with a strong emphasis on decolonization and its impact on shaping our collective futures. Although migration and/or mobility constitutes a central theme, the cluster broadens its scope to actively integrate contemporary postcolonial experiences and highlight the need for a decolonial perspective.

In today’s global climate, where anti-migrant sentiments, revocation of citizenship, and intensified border policing are increasingly prioritized by states, even within liberal democracies, understanding migration’s complexities has never been more urgent. These developments not only affect migrants but also challenge fundamental ideas of justice, belonging, and human rights in a postcolonial context. Through its work, the cluster seeks to contribute meaningfully to these critical conversations, addressing the shifting realities of migration and its wider implications in a world marked by global inequalities.

The cluster is interdisciplinary, welcoming contributions from the Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities with a postcolonial focus. By blending theoretical and empirical approaches, we aim to offer a comprehensive framework for understanding contemporary migration issues and propose new insights and solutions. The research explores the role of decolonization in redefining questions of justice, citizenship, and belonging, providing fresh perspectives on how these global challenges intersect with the legacies of colonialism.
