Doctoral project: Police students’ physical ability and health – a project about tests, injuries and performance in police education

The aim of this project is to compile the international literature on physical tests used in police training, and to evaluate the physical tests used in the Swedish police training program. The project also aims to investigate injury frequency and the effect of injury prevention measures among police students.

More about the project

Physical fitness testing is a fundamental part of police training programs. Such tests are used to prepare and ensure that police students possess the physical ability required for future police work. The physical tests in police training therefore form the basis for evaluating the abilities required to work as a police officer, and the physical capacity of police students is an important factor in relation to preventing injuries. Despite this, there seem to be a lack of research when it comes to research evaluating physical tests and injuries within the Swedish police training program.

The aim of this project is to compile the international literature on physical tests that are used in police training, and to evaluate the physical tests used in the Swedish police training program. The project also aims to investigate injury frequency and the effect of injury prevention measures among police students.

This project can provide important information into the physical capacity and abilities of police students in relation to both performance and injuries and will critically appraise the physical test battery currently used in the Swedish police training program. Findings on injury frequence and the extent to which injuries affect police students may support the development of preventive interventions. The project may thereby help to better prepare police students for police work, while also promoting sustainable health.
