More about the project
In my PhD thesis, 'The Art of Repeating Oneself: Self-Adaptation in the Migratory Context', I study works of certain migrant authors who have adapted their own books into films, practicing a multidimensional authorship over media, as well as cultural borders.
My main goal is to analyze the authorship which is constructed through these practices of retelling by mapping out the different layers of translation and transmediation at stake in the process and products of self-adaptation. I try to develop and bring together the theoretic discussions around two concepts: migrant authorship on one hand and adaptations as/in migration on the other. Intermediality and transmediality, migration, translation and authorship are thus the main fields I am playing in.
Marjane Satrapi and Atiq Rahimi are the two self-adapting authors on whom I focus the most in this research. The varied resumé of both authors in trespassing media and cultural borders has provided me with ample material in which several languages – Persian, French, English – are brought together with several media – novel, comics, live-action film and animation film.
The project is part of the research in Linnaeus University Centre for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies (IMS).
