Does dissolved organic nitrogen from decaying vegetation fuel toxic dinoflagellate blooms in coastal waters of the Baltic Sea?

Shallow coastal waters in the Baltic Sea, rich in organic matter, are threatened by toxic dinoflagellate blooms, which have deleterious effects on human health and aquatic life. We use 15N tracer experiments to study nitrogen uptake from decaying vegetation by dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii coupled to population genetics. The project is a collaboration with the Finnish Environment Institute and field sampling is done in the archipelago of Åland and at the coast of Poland and Southeast Sweden.
