More about the project
Although there exist a lot of examples on the use of different agro-fibres and residues as raw materials for wood-based panels, so far these materials have been applied very little in the industry. This project will provide an integral and interactive global database on agro-industrial materials and viable technologies for their transformation into valuable materials for the wood panel industry. It will serve as a valuable decision making tool for revealing unexplored opportunities, challenges to overcome and successful paths in light-weight panel manufacturing. Also, a sustainable production line of panels with a fully bio-based composition will be presented using selected local agro-industrial feedstocks and side streams and including details on raw material handling, cost analysis and energy consumption.
The project results will help the wood panel industry to meet their raw material needs by exploring a huge sustainable material base of agricultural origin for new fibres and bio-based adhesives. At the same time, the agro-industries will also benefit by finding new utilisation solutions and markets for their continuously increasing residues and byproducts with low value, which in many cases consist a pollutant source.
