Project: Alternative Media Logic

Alternative Media Logic examines the appeal and impact of alternative media on the Swedish media landscape and the conditions of democratic discourse. "Media logic" has long served theoretically to help explain how established media work. But today, an alternative media logic is emerging. To be able to describe an alternative media logic, a broad intermediate approach to news is needed.

More about the project

In this interdisciplinary project, media, language, music, literature, political scientists and historians of ideas collaborate on the logic and idiom of alternative media from different perspectives. The goal is to gain nuanced knowledge about an important emerging actor in the public sphere.

We focus primarily on politically/ideologically positioned alternative mediators of news and opinion. In an active exchange with the journalistic practice that is highly influenced by the development, the following questions are examined:

  • How can we better understand the media logic of alternative actors that challenge established journalism?
  • What are the expressions of alternativity (e.g. in sound and image design, performance of gender, emotions, professionalism/authenticity, information/commentary)?
  • How does alternative news format affect public discourse and its conditions within a democratic society?
