Project: Baltic Phytoremediation (BAPR)
The project aims to increase the use of green technology in order to decrease the pollution discharges in the South Baltic area. The proposed project “Baltic Phytoremediation” will well contribute to the market spread of the proposed technology and to the diversification of the environmental remediation. The project can also be a contributing factor to effective environmental management of contaminated sites, and it fits the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea Region very well.

More about the project
This project aims at preventing soil contamination, which is a challenge defined on the European-wide scale. The threat from heavy metals soil pollution results directly as the consequence of the movement in the food chain: the soil – plants (i.e. crops) – animals and the possibility of accumulation in the last link, i.e. the human body. The project fills the niche for green tech innovation, linking agriculture, industry and green technologies for a cleaner environment.
The overall idea of the project is to raise cross-border awareness of available green phytoremediation technologies to clean soil from pollutants such as oil, industry related contaminants, heavy metals, nutrients and microplastics, through new arenas of cooperation that focus on a circular economy approach.
The project will show case solutions on phytoremediation and energy production from grown crops to clean polluted soil, and host a network to exchange cross-border knowledge through best practices/standards.
Specific objective
The overall objective is increased use of green technologies in order to decrease the pollution discharges in the South Baltic area.
The project is part of the research in The Environmental Science and Engineering Group (ESEG) research group.

- NSR AB
To reduce the nutrient levels in the landfill's protective and plant layers, leading to reduced pollution of leachate water so that it can be released directly to the recipient, and identify a way to utilize harvested biomass. - Gdańsk Municipality Waste Management Facility
Selection and testing of a plant species useful for phytoremediation of leakages from landfill in order to their biological detoxification. This general aim includes also the assessment on the possibility of phytoextraction from soil of pollutants included in the leakages, e.g. heavy metals (especially Cr at various oxidation states) as well as organic pollutants, including PAHs, dioxins or PCBs. - Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry
Evaluation of the potential of various plant species to accumulate heavy metals in their biomass by fertilizing them with sewage sludge obtained from Klaipėda city water treatment plants. Learn more here!

BAPR 1st cross-border seminar 7 May, 2020
On behalf of Zaklad Utylizacyjny and Gdansk University of Technology, project partners have been invited to the 1st online Cross-border seminar in BAPR project. The seminar was held on May 7, 2020.
Purpose was to provide understanding about phytoremediation issues in Poland and dissemination the results and knowledge to reduced pollution, but also to create new networks of cooperation.
Cooperating organizations, beneficiaries, Polish entrepreneurship and stakeholders were targeted during this one-day seminar.
Study tour was produced by hosted partner and has been specifically designed for online meeting to give overview over Gdansk Municipal Waste Treatment Plant.
BAPR distance meeting 17 April 2020
BAPR project partners from Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania and Poland gathered in front of the screens to discuss how the Covid-19 situation is affecting the project. Some of the questions discussed were:
- What options we have to work on the project's goals under new circumstances.
- The work plan changes, as well as project digitalization.
- The reduced traveling costs and how that could be used from one activity to another.
