More about the project
The project aims at establishing a cross-disciplinary, international research network working on issues concerning contemporary cultural aspects of classification. Raising awareness of classification practices in modern culture serves to emphasize how sorting things into categories is both an everyday accomplishment and a highly cultural and political activity with consequences for those who are classified and for those who classify.
Specific focus is on the systems (e.g., classification systems), media technologies (e.g., search engines or social media), and cultural institutions (e.g libraries and/or museums) who have categorization and classification as their raison d’être and how they struggle with modern culture’s ideological contestations. Within the first phase of this project, a Nordic workshop will be organized, and an international anthology published.
