Project: Designing for hybrid play and hybrid learning activities in School-Age Educare Centers

Children increasingly spend their free time in digital environments such as games, social media and online communities. This creates a need to strengthen School-Age Educare teachers’ competence in drawing on pupils’ prior experiences and knowledge as resources for learning, participation, and social development. The aim of this project is to develop teaching in School-Age Educare Centers, with a particular focus on promoting pupils’ digital competence and providing opportunities for hybrid play.

More about the project

The aim of this project is to develop teaching in School-Age Educare Centers, with a particular focus on promoting pupils’ digital competence and providing opportunities for hybrid play. By developing forms of collaboration between academia and municipality, School-Age Educare teachers gain access to current research and research support in bridging theory into practice, while researchers gain deeper knowledge of how digital learning tools can be used in School-Age Educare Centers in various ways.

In the participating School-Age Educare Centers, it has been noted that children spend an increasing share of their free time in digital environments. Many pupils need support in understanding the possibilities and risks of the digital worlds, and staff competencies need to be strengthened in order to engage in conversations with pupils about digital habits, ethics, and responsibility. In the short term, the project aims to contribute to the development of School-Age Educare pedagogy so that it better promotes pupils’ digital competence and critical thinking. In the long term, the goal is to create School-Age Educare Center practices that more accurately reflect children’s everyday realities in a digitalized society.

By designing hybrid learning activities on a scientific basis and grounded in the current pupil groups’ interests, the School-Age Educare Center can help pupils experience a meaningful leisure time. This gives them opportunities to broaden and deepen their interests and make new discoveries that support their development and learning. Designing teaching involves planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching situations in the School-Age Educare Center with a clear pedagogical purpose.Through collegial learning, experimentation, and reflection, participants can develop a research-informed approach that strengthens their professional competence and provides teaching with clearer goals and purposes aligned with the curriculum.

The project aims to highlight both School-Age Educare teachers’ and children’s perspectives. The project has the potential to contribute valuable new knowledge, as there is limited research on how digital learning tools can be used in School-Age Educare pedagogical teaching based on children’s digital experiences.

Connection to research groups

The project is part of the research in the research groups Research on pedagogical professions and practices (PEPP) and Forskargruppen för fritidspedagogisk forskning (FRIP), and the Linnaeus Knowledge Environment Education in Change.
