Project: Intermediality as a Part of Reading Improvement Activities in Swedish Upper Secondary School

The aim of the project is to improve the pupils’ reading and writing competences in upper secondary school.

Project members: Jørgen Bruhn and Liviu Lutas

This project was a part of a larger project at a national scale implemented by the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) aiming at improving the pupils' reading and writing competences in upper secondary school. Intermediality is one of the eight different modules presented as ways to improve the pupils' act of reading literature.

The project is now available online at Skolverket, Lärportalen (open to the public), but the upper secondary schools which choose to join the project actively will have the possibility to have special activities for their teachers for a certain cost.

For each of the eight modules, there is an article and an explanatory film made available for the upper secondary school teachers. In the article, Bruhn and Lutas briefly explain the theoretical grounds of intermediality theory and suggest a method of working with literary texts on the basis of this theory. Bruhn and Lutas also offer a specific example, namely a short story from 2011 by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist.
