More about the project
This project investigates leadership as existential challenge, as a particular state of ’being in the world’. Existentialism as a philosophical perspective is interesting as it “deals with specific individuals in concrete problematic situations” (Flynn, 2006:28-29) and tries to understand humans “individual and social place in the world (Lawler, 2005:216). In line with the existential perspective builds the project upon subjective experiences by persons in leading positions. Because leadership necessitates followership is the relation to ‘the other’ of particular interest. As a leader you are always in the eyes of others, a subject of other’s attention and scrutinizing, and cannot escape understanding yourself as leader and your actions based on this attention.
The relation to ‘the other’ include several interesting aspects relevant to leadership, such as shaping of leader identities, the inevitable publicness of your actions, as well as ethical aspects in relation to others.
The project is part of the research in Leadership and Organisation.
