More about the project
Wood and timber have a complex internal structure, and large variations in properties occur in different material directions, between trees, between boards from the same tree and even within individual boards. One of the properties that is most crucial for strength, stiffness and shape stability of the timber is the fibre orientation within a board. For both strength and stiffness, the presence of knots and local fibre distortion related to knots are very important.
Increased knowledge of local fibre orientation close to knots, which is the aim of the project, is therefore a prerequisite for continued development of strength grading methods that, with high precision, can predict the actual properties of the timber locally in boards, thus contributing to better material utilization and increased processing value in the production chain.
The project is part of the research in the Wood Building Technology research group.
