During the last decade, food waste has gone from being a non-question to an environmental question in focus, in society in general as well as on the food market. Now researchers at Linnaeus University and IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute will work on a project led by Statistics Sweden to study this change in order to understand how it happened and what key factors, actors and driving forces are behind.
The aim of the project is to increase the understanding of how changes in society can affect the national environmental quality goals. To reduce food waste is one of the most important measures to reduce the climate impact from the food industry. One third of all food that is produced goes to waste, which means that food waste represents the third largest emission of greenhouse gases.
To their help, the researchers have a new register with quantitative data that will be used to secure and measure the impact of this changed focus, as well the timing and speed of the change. Data from interviews with experts and actors in the industry as well as media analyses will also be used. Through this approach, the idea is to increase the understanding of the change process and its causes and effects, something that can be used also to inspire other processes.
