More about the project
Borders are everywhere – some are robust and distinct, while others are more or less imaginary or fluid. As our point of departure, the concept "border" can have several meanings but is of great importance for the understanding of the past, the present and the future. The conceptual ideas of "police", "crime" and "cooperation" appear to be nationally idiosyncratic.
In a pilot study for this project, the following observations were made. A male Norwegian answered: "I would rather be arrested by Norwegian police than by Swedish police" when asked what it is like to live in the border region between Norway and Sweden. Because "they are much friendlier than Swedish police", he filled in. A Danish police chief answered: "Yes, nowadays we have confidence in Swedish police" to our question about how the cooperation between the police in the Öresund region works; implicitly: they did not trust their Swedish colleaques in the past.
The national entities "police", "crime" and "cooperation" are particularly important to study in border areas between our Nordic countries, but also intranational, because borders are everywhere. The starting point for this project is the stated goal that the Nordic region will be the world's most sustainable and integrated region by 2030. The aim is to describe and analyse everyday police work and crime prevention cooperation in border areas, based on quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods.
The project is part of the research in the Centre for Police Research and Development research group.
