More about the project
The aim of the project is to contribute, from a curriculum theory perspective, new robust and systematically developed knowledge about how the idea of a “fact-based curriculum” emerges as a counterreaction to the curriculum of the 1990s and is subsequently realized in and through three phases of fact- and subject-oriented curriculum reforms. What problems does it intend to solve? How is a fact-based curriculum realized as a solution to these problems?
To achieve the aim of the project, we sought to answer the following questions:
- How is the introduction of a fact-based curriculum legitimized in the policy arena?
- How is knowledge selected and organized in the curriculum text?
- How is the new curriculum realized in different teaching and subject contexts?
Each question is addressed within the framework of one of the project’s three substudies. The project thus takes a holistic approach to the fact-based curriculum and contributes new knowledge about how it is legitimized at the policy level and realized in classroom teaching and assessment practices.
The project, which will run from 2026 to 2029, will involve document analyses, classroom observations, and interviews with teachers and policy experts. The project group consists of Professor Andreas Nordin, Professor Daniel Sundberg, and Senior Lecturer Bettina Vogt, members of Studies in Curriculum, Teaching, and Evaluation, one of Sweden’s leading research environments on educational reforms and curricula.
