Project: To map oneself in a colonised world. Swedish travel literature 1919-1939 and the global legacies of the Enlightenment

The aim of the project is to examine how the Swedish travel literature from the period relates to European colonialisms and to Eurocentric ideas of enlightenment and development. Travel literature from Africa will be analysed with focus on questions related to discourse, genre, intertextuality, gender, ethnicity and modernity.

More about the project

The project will start by examining Swedish travel literature from Africa, especially from central and eastern Africa, focusing on the following genres: expedition narratives, narratives of hunting- and adventure, narratives of colonisation and missionary narratives.
