The subjects of the Astroparticle Physics research group include hardware activities, data analysis and interpretation of results in the field of Very-High-Energy extra-galactic emitters. Our scientific focus is on Active Galactic Nuclei.

The research of the Astroparticle Physics group is connected to a number of interesting and cutting-edge projects. Read more about the backgrounds and the projects below.


ALTO is the name given by the Linnaeus University Very-High-Energy gamma-ray group to a project we are developing for a wide-field Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray detector to be installed at very high altitude in the Southern hemisphere. For the ALTO project, the Astroparticle Physics research group works on:

  • The design of the detection tanks and of the full array.
  • The construction of a prototype detection unit on the Växjö campus, including choice of the photo-multipliers, of the scintillator and Cherenkov units optimization, and of the electronics needed to digitize the photo-multiplier signals.
  • The optimization of the array trigger.

Possible Bachelor and Master Thesis projects

Are you interested in making your Bachelor or Master Thesis in the field of astroparticle physics? Below, please find some of the current projects available. These might change in the future as we always make advancements in science (fortunately). For all information about the projects, please contact Yvonne Becherini.

  • Projects related to the study of Active Galactic Nuclei with existing data from the Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. experiments. Requirements: skills or willingness to learn how the analysis is done in a Linux environment and how to run analysis scripts. Part of the thesis time is devoted to reading several references in order to understand the physics background.
  • Projects related to Monte Carlo simulations and analysis for the ALTO experiment, which is a next generation Very-High-Energy gamma-ray observatory in Chile. The student will be able to study the ALTO performance at different zenith angles and to understand the ALTO energy threshold and optimal analysis cuts etc. Requirements: skills or willingness to learn C++ programming.
  • Projects related to the calculations of ALTO expected sensitivity from Monte Carlo simulations for Galactic and extra-galactic source types. The student will help in the understanding of how much observing time would be needed by ALTO for the detection of an astrophysical source. This is important in order to understand what would be the time delay for giving an alert to the other observatories if a source is "flaring" (a source is "flaring" when it is showing high flux state with respect to the normal conditions). Requirements: skills or willingness to learn C++ programming.
  • Projects related to the adaptation of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) electronics to ALTO purposes. Requirements: interest/skills in electronics and signal processing and some skills in C++ programming.
