More about the project

The transformation of starch into renewable adhesives provides many advantages for the wood panel industries. This is not only due to their abundance and low cost, but also because of the growing environmental awareness of the formaldehyde-based adhesives. Further benefits will be attributed to the higher recyclability of wood panels.

The use of starch-based adhesives is however still limited to lab scale investigations, due to their lack of bonding strength, storage stability and water tolerance. Nevertheless, there is a rising interest in using starch-based adhesives for industrial boards. This project is therefore conducted to develop an innovative research in exploring the fundamentals related to the development of thermally healable and remendable starch-based adhesives and to expand its uses in wood composite industries.

The project is part of the research in the Group of Forest Products research group.
