Research

Catherine Legrand conducts research on marine phytoplankton - including toxic algae - ecology, physiology and diversity. Her research includes studies on the microbial food webs and how these are influenced by external factors.

Legrand's focus is on the complex biological and chemical interactions between phytoplankton and bacteria in the ocean and on their significant role in the formation of food webs for plankton. The research is crucial for being able to detect microbial processes that affect the energy flow and diversity of the ecosystem, such as fish stocks, eutrophication and algal blooms.
