Johannes Widegren is a doctoral student in Computer and Information Science at the Department of Cultural Sciences. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in English with Specialization in Linguistics at Linnaeus University.
He is writing his dissertation within the project "Artificial Intelligence as a risk and opportunity for the authenticity of archives", a collaboration between Linnaeus University and Uppsala University funded by the Wallenberg Foundations’ research program WASP-HS, which is an initiative for research in AI and autonomous systems within the humanities and social sciences.
The dissertation examines the possibilities of using AI technologies in an ethically sustainable manner to enrich metadata for archives pertaining to the Sámi, in order to improve search and retrieval. The wider purpose is to answer the question of if and how AI can assist in future-proofing Sámi cultural heritage.
