Maria Owiredu specializes in Swedish party politics and political behavior, with a particular emphasis on foreign policy. She successfully defended her thesis in May 2024, titled "Swedish Political Parties and the Israel-Palestine Issue: An Analysis of the Actions of Swedish Parties from 2006 to 2021." The thesis aims to examine Swedish foreign policy within the context of domestic political debate, focusing on the Israel-Palestine conflict and how Swedish parties in the Riksdag have addressed this issue during the specified period.
Maria is a member of the Linnaeus University Research Group on Political Behavior, Opinion, and Parties (LNU-POP). Additionally, she is involved in a research project funded by EUinWell, titled "Managing Political Emotions: Addressing the Impact of Political News and Polarization on Mental Health and Well-Being."
