In the autumn semester 2011, Sweden introduced application and tuition fees for international students who are not citizens of the EU, EEA or Switzerland or exchange students (whose studies are regulated by agreements between Swedish and foreign universities).
There are some exceptions to this general rule. The following is a list of criteria which exempt individuals, meaning they do not have to pay application and tuition fees. If you do not meet any of these criteria, you are most likely required to pay fees.
You are NOT required to pay application and tuition fees if:
- You have Swedish citizenship
- You have been granted a permanent Swedish residence permit
- You have been granted a temporary Swedish residence permit for reasons other than studies (having a temporary residence permit for studies in Sweden does NOT grant you exemption from fee payments)
- You are a family member of a citizen of an EU or EEA country, or Switzerland, AND have temporary or permanent right of residence in Sweden
- You have long-term resident status in Sweden
- You have long-term resident status in another country in the European Union AND have Swedish residency
Tuition fees will apply to bachelor and master programmes and courses, while PhD programmes remain free of tuition fees. PhD students who apply to a master's course will however have to pay tuition fees. Universities and university colleges set their own fee levels. You apply for courses and programmes through www.universityadmissions.se - an application fee of SEK 900 will be charged. If you started your studies before the tuition fees were implemented, the old rules apply even if your ongoing studies stretch into and beyond the academic year of 2011/2012. You have up until 31st of December, 2018 to complete your studies without paying tuition fees if you started before 2011.
Payment and reimbursement
When you apply for programmes or courses at universityadmissions.se, you must pay an application fee of SEK 900 (approximately EUR 100). This payment has to be made directly to universityadmissions.se – you can read more about that at the University Admission website.
Payment of tuition fees
Once you have received your notification of selection, you will receive an e-mail asking you to order an invoice. Follow the instructions in the email and order an invoice through our payment portal. Once you have ordered an invoice the request will be processed by our financial department and an invoice will be uploaded in the payment portal for you to download.
With the invoice you will get more detailed information on how and when the payment should be made, but some information can be found below as well:
- Tuition fees always have to be paid in advance for the upcoming semesters
- The tuition fee has to be paid through your bank account, via bank transfer. Please note that we do not accept cheque-payments of any sort.
- You should pay your tuition fee before you apply for the residence permit. For the application to be complete the tuition fee has to be paid, a complete application will be processed faster.
Reimbursement of tuition fees
To request a reimbursement, a specific application form, which can be found here, needs to be filled out.
A request for reimbursement shall preferably be sent before the start of the semester.
The decision about the reimbursement of tuition fees is made by the head of the International Office at Linnaeus University, after individual assessment of each application.
As stated in the local regulations for tuition fees at Linnaeus University reimbursement is done according to the following:
- If application for reimbursement is received by Linnaeus University before the official start of the term, the full tuition fee excluding administrative fee and bank fees will be repaid.
- If application for reimbursement is received by Linnaeus University within three weeks of the official start of the term, 85% of the tuition fee excluding administrative and bank fees will be reimbursed.
- If application for reimbursement is received by Linnaeus University later than three weeks after the official start of the term but within six weeks after the start of the term, 50% of the tuition fee will be reimbursed.
- If application for reimbursement of tuition fee is received by Linnaeus University later than six weeks after the official start of the term, the tuition fee will not be reimbursed.
In order for reimbursement of tuition fee to be made according to the above listed criteria, the following requirements must be met:
- The individual student must take contact with the higher education institution concerning reimbursement
- In case of rejection from the Swedish Migration Agency, decision from the Swedish Migration Agency should be attached together with the application for reimbursement
- In cases where decision from the Swedish Migration Agency cannot be attached, administrator at Linnaeus University takes contact with the Swedish Migration Agency to have a dialogue on the student's case and after this an individual assessment is made
- Passport copy is attached
- Receipt on payment of tuition fee is attached
No reimbursement of tuition fee will be made in case:
- student drops out after the start of the term (if the student has registered on and started the course/programme)
- suspension as a result of disciplinary measures
- retroactive change of tuition fee obligation
- revoked admission on account of incorrect documents
In exceptional cases, an individual assessment for possible reimbursement of tuition fee can be made.
If a reimbursement has been granted, the financial department will get in touch with you regarding the reimbursement procedure. Below follow some important facts:
- no accrued interest is paid on the reimbursed sum
- on reimbursement, an administrative fee of SEK 5,000 will be subtracted for admissions to fulltime studies. Regarding admissions to less than full time studies, the sum of the administrative fee corresponds to the percentage amount of the number of credit points the student is admitted to in relation to full time studies.
The tuition fees at Linnaeus University are divided into categories. Course fees are determined on an annual basis but will apply to the whole period of study for which the student has been admitted.
From the autumn semester 2015 the tuition fees have been adjusted and the following tuition fees will be valid:
SEK* 85,000 per academic year
Natural sciences/Engineering/Education/Pharmacy and Miscellaneous
SEK* 130,000 per academic year
SEK* 140,000 per academic year
SEK* 260,000 per academic year
SEK* 170,000 per academic year

Please note that the tuition fee does not include living expenses, such as accommodation, food, course literature etc. The calculated cost of living for students in Sweden is approximately SEK 8,200 per month.
