About the lecture

1973 the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin commissioned from the Swiss composer Frank Martin a concerto for violin and string orchestra with which to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the International Music Council.

The desired scoring reminded Frank of Bach's concertos, with which he felt he should not compete. Thus he suggested a compromise: he would write a suite in six movements, each of them based on one or more panels from the famous Passion polyptych on the rear of Duccio di Buoninsegna's Siena Maestà — a kind of "instrumental passion music."
