"I’m a mix" – Urban youths’ negotiations of heritage and identity in an age of global migration

Kaja Hannedatter Sontum, doctoral student at University of Oslo, will give the lecture “I’m a mix” – Urban youths’ negotiations of heritage and identity in an age of global migration: a perspective from Oslo, Norway.

About the lecture

Our knowledge about the past confirms how people have always been mobile and that contemporary populations are the result of migration. Yet, heritage policies and practises continue to be anchored in a traditional ethno-identity paradigm. Focusing on urban Norwegian context, this talk discusses the multifaceted nature of self-positioning by youths, and addresses tensions between their articulations of lived experiences and current strategies of inclusion and diversity within the heritage field. Potentials for museums to serve as arenas for the navigation of perennial questions of identity and belonging, is discussed.
