Synechococcus in coastal waters – an odyssey of colors

The picocyanobacterium Synechococcus is the second most abundant phytoplankton group in the ocean and is significant to net primary production. It reaches high abundances in nutrient rich coastal and temperate waters yet the factors controlling its abundance and distributions remain poorly understood. Synechococcus consists of diverse sublineages that are thought to represent distinct ecotypes. Isolates display an impressive color diversity suggesting that they are adapted to a wide range of light niches.

In this talk Hanna Farnelid will present data of Synechococcus dynamics in the Baltic Sea and describe how molecular and single cell methods can be used to investigate the distribution and activity of such diverse ecotypes.
