Titel
Vernacular chronicles around the medieval Baltic: Towards a literary geography
Abstract
I would like in this paper to explore some ideas relating to a larger project on a literary history of the medieval Baltic that is inclusive in the sense that it brings together the different languages used in the region. Although a certain amount of work has been done on the representation of Scandinavia/the Baltic/the North in Latin writing, vernacular texts have not been similarly drawn into the picture. I focus on chronicles here because of their role in the generation of identity, and hope to discuss some examples of the textual and narrative strategies used in them to represent and imagine geographical features in the area.
