Microglial responses in cultured retina
Microglial cells are reactive during retinal disease and degeneration, but their function(s) are not fully understood. In our research we use retinal explants in co-culture with retinal pigment epithelial cells as an experimental model system to study degenerating events, mimicking those described in human retinal diseases. By using microscopy, we have been able to visualize an increased density of reactive microglial cells in parallel with previously known protective stages in co-cultures. In addition, two types of microglial cells cloud be distinguished, one dark and one pale microglia if these are of two separate subtypes remains to be established.
