Sammanfattning/Abstract
In my first lecture, I will speak about materials in terms of their magnetic response, focusing on systems with long-range magnetic order. In most cases, magnetic ordering corresponds to collinear (i.e. ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic) alignment of magnetic moments of atoms, but there are systems exhibiting by more complex, noncollinear magnetic states due to interplay between various microscopic interactions. Geometry of the system affects the magnetic order, too, especially at the nanoscale. In some cases, localized textures emerge demonstrating a link between magnetism and topology. Overview of recent theoretical developments and experimental discoveries in this field will be presented. Finally, I will discuss applications of magnetic materials, mostly in information technology, but also in biology and medicine.
