IMS Seminarium
Guests: Eleni Timplalexi, Challenging Key Certainties in Communication through Elleström’s Medium-centered Model
Välkommen till det veckovisa IMS-seminariet!
This seminar is in English.
This week we are visited by Eleni Timplalexi who will give a presentation titled Challenging Key Certainties in Communication through Elleström’s Medium-centered Model: focusing on “Transfer” and “Medium”.
About the seminar
Communication has for long been seen as an exchange of information,
messages and/or meaning. According to Elleström’s medium-centered model of
communication (2018; 2021), communication is a process where cognitive
imports from producer’s mind(s) are transferred to perceiver’s mind(s)
through an intermediate stage/media product (Elleström 2018, p. 269-70).
It is here argued that, despite the fact that the latter model
phenomenally adheres to the Saussurean “speech circuit” paradigm, it also
hints towards a reconsideration of the basics of communication. Through
critically addressing the constants in the medium-centered model, by
adopting as a point of entry that of the media product, several limit case
examples are visited. Most of communication constants are challenged,
while new aporias emerge. Gibson’s ecology of perception and Féral’s
theatricality of the gaze are introduced as catalysts in a discussion that
attempts at systematizing such considerable implications, addressing
potential overlaps between perception, communication and mediation.
