Astrid Erll, Media, Media and Implicit Collective Memory

About the seminar

This lecture addresses the role of media in the production and transformation of implicit collective memory. With the term 'implicit collective memory' I address the invisible, 'hidden world' of cultural schemata, narrative patterns, habits of thinking and doing, which are transmitted by memory and shape our experience and actions - but usually without our awareness.

Media of explicit collective memory are very well researched in the field of memory studies. There are numerous groundbreaking studies about monuments, historiography, film, photography, or literature and their visible, conscious, often commemorative dimensions in the production and reception of memory. Tackling the media of implicit collective memory is another matter: How to describe what usually remains hidden? I will discuss concepts of framing, priming, and premediation in order to propose an interdisciplinary dialogue about the media logics of implicit collective memory.

Bio

Astrid Erll is professor of Anglophone literatures and cultures at Goethe University Frankfurt and founder of the Frankfurt Memory Studies Platform (https://www.memorystudies-frankfurt.com/). She is author of Memory in Culture (Palgrave, 2011), and introduction to the field of memory studies, and general editor of the series "Media and Cultural Memory" (de Gruyter, since 2004)
