Media Product and Lars Elleström's Media Model: A Critical Discussion

This week Nafiseh Mousavi will lead a critical discussion on the concept of ‘media product’ based on Lars Elleström’s media model. The seminar is open to all.

About the seminar

The concept of ‘media product’ is a core concept in Lars Elleström’s medium-centered model of communication. Media product is the analytical point of departure for the intermedial analyses performed in this framework and brings materiality, perception, and culture together. In this seminar we intend to delineate the concept and discuss it critically.

How can we define media product most efficiently? How does it contribute to the study of media and media relations? How can we criticize and develop it?

We will begin the seminar with a brief presentation going through the several ways this concept has been defined and developed in Lars’ work and beyond it. I also suggest we (re)read the latest conceptualization of the term in the revised and expanded version of “Modalities of Media” article:

  • Elleström, Lars. "The modalities of media II: An expanded model for understanding intermedial relations." Beyond media borders, volume 1: Intermedial relations among multimodal media (2021): 3-91.

Preferably pages 9-33 if you are not ready to dig into the whole 89 pages :D (and 9-16 if you are in a hurry).
