LNUC CONCURRENCES SEMINAR SERIES IN COLONIAL AND POSTCOLONIAL STUDIES

Science beyond race? Knowledge production and the construction of ethnic minorities in Sweden

Welcome to the LNUC Concurrences Seminar Series in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies!

Lecturer
Ida Al Fakir, PhD in History, The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences

Title
Science beyond race? Knowledge production and the construction of ethnic minorities in Sweden

Abstract
The 1945 census was the last to record race in Sweden and race as a scientifically viable category was increasingly questioned during the postwar decades. Swedish scientists, however, retained interest in the potential connections between genetic and/or cultural background and illness or health. The lecture and seminar will discuss what scientists have done to meet this interest and what the consequences have been for different groups of citizens.

Information
The seminar will be held in English.
