Elleström’s media modalities in intermedial analysis
Welcome to the weekly IMS seminar!
Welcome to next week’s IMS seminar, “Elleström’s media modalities in intermedial analysis” with Beate Schirrmacher and Anne Holm:
About the seminar
“Elleström’s framework of media types and media modalities (2010, 2021) provides a flexible framework that mediation always takes place on different levels in what Elleström calls the material, spatiotemporal, sensorial and semiotic media modalities and describes them as “necessary categories of media traits” (2021: 47). In this workshop, we present different ways how the media modalities can be applied in different forms of intermedial analysis and invite for further discussion.
In Beate Schirrmacher’s analysis of Evolution by the Swedish poet Johannes Heldén, the media modalities provide a stable frame for comparisons across media borders. Anne Holm’s exploration of Australian-born songwriter Nick Cave’s lyrics brings together the notion of cross-modal iconicity (Elleström, 2017) and modal theories of meaning, arguing that a cognitive linguistic approach facilitates a nuanced understanding of the material and the sensorial modalities in particular: http://www.textevolution.net/
