Digital Death or Legacy: Our personal digital heritage amidst an ecological crisis

Välkommen till höstterminens högre seminarier vid institutionen för kulturvetenskaper!

Föreläsare: Marije Miedema (visiting PhD researcher with Heritage Futures)

Titel: Digital Death or Legacy: Our personal digital heritage amidst an ecological crisis

Abstrakt:
This talk tension between the long-term valuation of our personal digital heritage and its long-term ecological effects. It draws on a long-term assemblage ethnography in the Netherlands, examining digital legacy, death, and heritage across different scales, sites, and practices. The research involves two groups: (1) individuals experiencing (temporary) socioeconomic difficulties, and (2) industry and public service professionals. By bringing together plural personal experiences and institutionalised perspectives, I create a space for emotion, affect, and sufficiency, rather than ratio, effect, and efficiency, in the preservation of our digital heritage amidst a climate crisis. By introducing the concept of relational preservation, I offer a different starting point for conceptualising heritage—one that reflects on how colonial and patriarchal views on technology permeate conversations about both the ecological impact and the solutions proposed to address them.
