IMS Book release: Piano Decompositions

On January 21, 5-6 pm (CET) we invite you to the hybrid book release of Piano Decompositions an exploration of destroyed and decaying musical instruments through an ecological and intermedial lens

Piano Decompositions: The Ecology of Destroyed and Decaying Instruments

Musical instruments are special objects that require care and attention. But what happens when artists place musical instruments outdoors, burn them or leave them to decay in ponds? It can provoke strong reactions when electric guitars are smashed or pianos are burned. In Piano Decompositions, Heidi Hart and Beate Schirrmacher explore what happens when we let go of control over musical instruments, when instruments are moved out of the protected cultural space and begin to interact with their surroundings? Can renatured musical instruments help us discover a new way of interacting with our environment? Heidi and Beate will present the background and outline of the study, and artists engaged with sounds and instruments, such as artistic researcher Stefan Östersjö, the artistic collective Hillside project will respond from their perspectives.
