Aki Siegel

Aki Siegel has a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Newcastle University, UK, and M.A. in Second Langauge Studies from University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Her research interest focuses on analyzing interactions from a microanalytical perspective, especially English as a lingua franca and multilingual interactions. She is interested in investigating how speakers from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds communicate, learn, and develop. She has received competitive grants from the Japanese government on researching longitudinal pragmatic development through English as a lingua franca interactions. Findings from these projects have been published in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of English as a Lingua Franca, International Journal of Applied Linguistics and the ELT Journal. Currently, she is researching on language use and experiences of study abroad students in Sweden. She is also interested in connecting research and teaching, and considering ways in which classroom language teaching and learning can be improved based on empirical evidence.
