Jag heter Björn C.G. Karlsson och är anställd som universitetslektor i fysikalisk kemi med galenisk farmaci. Sedan 2013 är jag även docent i fysikalisk kemi.
Undervisning
Min undervisning bedriver jag huvudsakligen för studenter på farmaceut-, nutrition och livsmedelsvetenskaps-, biomedicinska analytiker- samt optikerprogrammet.
Utöver undervisning på dessa grundutbildningsprogram så medverkar jag även på kursen Kemi bas A 7,5 fp (0KE002) som är en behörighetsgivande utbildning för studenter som inte har en naturvetenskaplig bakgrund.
Jag är idag kursansvarig och examinator på följande kurser:
- Organisk kemi A 7,5 hp (1KE010)
- Galenisk fysikalisk farmaci 7,5 hp (1FA002)
- Fysikalisk kemi med livsmedelskemisk inriktning 7,5 hp (1KE018).
Utöver dessa grundutbildningskurser har jag även ansvar för kurser på avancerad nivå och forskarnivå:
- Naturvetenskaplig forskningsmetodik 15 hp (4XN002/4XN502) är en kurs på mastersnivå och för doktorander där jag är delkursansvarig för Labbsäkerhet 3 hp
- Modern kemi och dess tillämpningar 15 hp (4KE003/4KE503) är en masterskurs där jag har delkursansvar för modulerna Datorbaserad kemi 3 hp, Molekylspektroskopi 3 hp samt Analytisk kemi med inriktning på biosensorer 3 hp.
Sedan 2018 är jag även ledamot i kursplansutskottet på fakulteten för hälsa- och livsvetenskaper (FHL-KUS).
Forskning
Jag har tidigare erfarenhet av biofysikaliska studier av läkemedelsmolekyler, proteiner samt syntetiska polymerer med fokus att utveckla nya sensormaterial och diagnostiska metoder.
I min pågående forskning är jag intresserad av att i detalj förstå de mekanismer som styr sjukdomsutvecklingen hos neurodegenerativa sjukdomar som t.ex. Parkinsons sjukdom (PD). Ett speciellt fokus är att kunna identiera och isolera de tidiga, lösliga, aggregat av protein som är förstadium till de "plack" som man vanligtvis hittar i hjärnan hos patienter som lider av PD och som leder till nervcellsdöd. En intressant hypotes vi arbetar efter är att det finns en aggregad proteinstruktur som har en tredimensionell struktur som är gemensam hos fler neurodegenerativa sjukdomar. Ett mål med den bedrivna forskningen är att försöka hitta denna gemensamma struktur. Framsteg på dessa fronter kommer hjälpa oss att utveckla nya sensorbaserade metoder för diagnostik men även terapeutiska metoder för att bekämpa dessa sjukdomar.
