Johan Höglund är professor i engelsk litteratur vid Institutionen för språk och medlem av Linneuniversitetets spetsforskningscentrum Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies. Hans driver forskningsprojekt Framtida matföreställningar i global klimatfiktion som finansieras av det svenska forskningsrådet FORMAS.

Hans forskning inriktar sig på förhållandet mellan imperialism och populärkultur och han fokuserar särskilt hur kolonialismens långa historia hänger samman med den pågående klimatkrisen. Han har publicerat ett antal böcker och artiklar i detta ämne och även givit populärvetenskapliga föreläsningar på Bokmässan i Göteborg och i andra forum. Han undervisar i engelsk och amerikansk litteratur, nordamerikastudier, kulturstudier och presentationsteknik. Han handleder uppsatser på alla nivåer samt doktorsavhandlingar. Johan har intervjuats ett flertal gånger av svensk och internationell media och välkomnar förfrågningar från media om sin egen forskning och om LNUC Concurrences verksamhet.

Undervisning

Johan Höglund undervisar i engelskspråkig litteratur från Storbritannien, USA, Kanada, Indien, Afrika och Karibien. Han har också avancerade kurser i kulturstudier och handleder uppsatser på alla nivåer. Han handleder avhandlingsprojekt och fungerar som examinator till doktorsavhandlingar skrivna vid Linnéuniversitetet och vid universitet utanför Sveriges gränser.

Forskning

Johan Höglunds forskning inriktar sig på förhållandet mellan populärkultur och imperialism. Han har särskilt undersökt hur USAs växande imperium har förhandlats i litteratur, film och dataspel. Under de senaste åren har han undersökt hur litteratur och film gör den viktiga kopplingen mellan den globala imperialismen och klimatkrisen. Han har publicerat ett stort antal internationella, vetenskapliga texter om dessa ämnen och är författare till monografin The American Imperial Gothic: Popular Culture, Empire, Violence (Ashgate, 2014) och redaktör och medförfattare till Dark Scenes from Damaged Earth: The Gothic Anthropocene (tillsammans med Justin D. Edwards och Rune Graulund, Minnesota University Press, 2021), Nordic Gothic (tillsammans med Maria Holmgren Troy, Yvonne Leffler och Sofia Wijkmark, Manchester University Press, 2020), B-Movie Gothic: International Perspectives (tillsammans med Justin Edwards, University of Edinburgh Press, 2017), Animal Horror Cinema: Genre, History and Criticism (tillsammans Katarina Gregersdotter and Nicklas Hållén, Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), och Transnational and Postcolonial Vampires (tillsammans med Tabish Khair, Palgrave Macmillan, 2012). Han har också publicerat i tidskrifter som Journal of Postcolonial Writing, Edda, Game Studies, English Literature in Transition, Continuum, och The European Journal of American Studies.

Uppdrag

Johan Höglund är medlem i ett av Linneuniversitetets sex spetsforskningscentra Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies. Detta centrum omfattar 20 forskare vid Linnéuniversitetet, 2 postdoc-forskare, ett antal gästforskare och ett omfattande internationellt nätverk. LNUC Concurrences studerar kulturmöten i historien, i dagens interkulturella samhälle och i kulturen. Johan är också ansvarig för arbetsgruppen Innovation som är en del av SIREUS, ett projekt initierat av The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce och som syftar till att öka samarbetet mellan svenska och och amerikanska universitet.
