Universitetsstudier i biologi och kemi vid Stockholms, Göteborgs och Uppsala Universitet, varav ett halvår vid University of Sussex. Doktorsexamen från organisk kemi, KTH 1989.

Professor i Organisk kemi 2010. 39 år inom forskningsområdet: organisk syntes/tillämpad ekologi; kontroll av skadeinsekter med hjälp av deras egna doftsignaler. 101 vetenskapliga publikationer och patent.

Undervisning

Rikard Unelius undervisningserfarenhet omfattar allmän kemi, organisk kemi fysikalisk kemi och läkemedelskemi på KTH, Högskolan i Kalmar och Linnéuniversitetet; allt från labhandledare på inledande kemi till kursansvarig på 10-poängskurs på doktorandnivå.

Forskning

Inom forskningsgruppen för Ekologisk kemi studerar vi hur insekter och växter "talar med varandra" med hjälp av kemiska ämnen. Vår forskning kan till exempel användas för att hindra spridningen av sjukdomar, att skydda grödor mot insektsangrepp eller att minska behovet av besprutningsmedel.

Vår kompetens ligger i kombinationen av att: dels att kunna identifiera och strukturbestämma de ytterst små doftmolekyler som insekter skickar ut, dels att kunna bygga molekyler på ett effektiv och praktiskt sätt, samt i en viss förståelse och kunskap om vilka substansklasser som olika insektsfamiljer vanligen kommunicerar med och hur dessa substanser biosyntetiskt hänger ihop.

Samhällsnyttan av forskningen ligger i miljövänliga metoder att kontrollera skadeinsekter, invaderande nya arter, samt minskning av pesticidanvändning i ett mer uthålligt jord- och skogsbruk. Inom ett projekt försöker vi i samarbete med andra grupper hitta attraherande substanser för en medicinskt viktig vektor av en dödlig parasit i Latinamerika (Chagas Disease). Med en detektionsmetod för insekten (fälla) skulle människoliv kunna räddas.

Ekologisk kemi är lokaliserat till hus Vita i Kalmar. Många projekt drivs i samarbete med forskare i andra delar av världen såsom Hawaii, Brasilien, Nya Zealand och Australien
