Coffee and Literature: Meet sanctuary author Aslı Ceren Aslan

Aslı Ceren Aslan has been a sanctuary author in Växjö since 2022. She has recently published the book "Bara vi själva kan rädda varandra". On December 7, she will come to Linnaeus University to talk about the book and life as a sanctuary author.

Aslı Ceren Aslan is a journalist and has worked as editor-in-chief of a Turkish magazine that mainly focuses on human rights, women's struggle for LGBTQ and gender equality issues. Aslı has been imprisoned in Turkey for two and a half years because of her journalistic work. During 2022-2024, she will be visiting Växjö as a sanctuary author.

The stories in her new book reveal how the patriarchal and heterosexist system manifests itself in our lives. Although we have the opportunity to discuss state policies, it is not so easy to talk about how the patriarchal and homophobic structures we are surrounded by have been internalized in us.

"Bara vi själva kan rädda varandra" is a novel that collects stories from LGBTI+ people and women in Turkey. It has been translated by Ulla Lundström.

- "The book is important to me because literature by and about women and queer people needs to take a larger place worldwide and portray the experiences and feelings they have been subjected to," says Aslı.
